Can You Pick Up Furniture Yourself? Here’s How to Check
Can You Pick Up Furniture Yourself? Here’s How to Check Before You Come
Planning to pick up your furniture yourself? In many cases, customer pickup is possible, but it is important to make sure your vehicle has enough usable cargo space before arriving.
Furniture can be large, heavy, or awkward to load. A quick measurement before pickup can help avoid damage to your furniture, your vehicle, and your time.
Measure the Narrowest Space First
When checking your vehicle, do not only measure the largest open area. Always measure the narrowest part of the cargo space, because that is usually where furniture may get stuck.
Please check:
- The width between the wheel wells
- The height of the trunk or hatch opening
- The depth from the back seats to the door
- Any angled corners, curves, or interior panels
- The height near the rear glass or back window
A common mistake is measuring the inside space only, but forgetting that the furniture must also pass through the opening. The item may fit inside the car, but still not fit through the trunk or hatch door.
Measure Usable Depth, Not Only Floor Depth
When measuring cargo depth, please do not only measure the cargo floor. In many SUVs and hatchbacks, the tailgate door is angled, which means the upper area may have less depth than the floor.
Even if the package fits on the floor, it may still prevent the tailgate from closing if the top of the item is too long or too tall. Always check the shortest usable depth from top to bottom.
Be Careful with Height and Corners
For SUVs, vans, and hatchbacks, please make sure the furniture does not push against the rear glass. The height of the item, especially at the corners, should not exceed the safe clearance near the back window.
Even if the main cargo area looks large enough, tall furniture or assembled pieces may touch the glass or prevent the door from closing properly.
Packaged Size vs. Assembled Size
Some furniture is much smaller while still in the box. If you would like, our team can help assemble the furniture for free when you pick it up.
However, please note that once assembled, the furniture may become much larger than the original package. Before choosing assembly at pickup, make sure your vehicle can fit the fully assembled item safely.
We Do Not Recommend Picking Up an Assembled Dining Table
For safety reasons, we do not recommend picking up an assembled dining table by yourself.
An assembled dining table usually has a higher center of mass, especially when the tabletop and base are already connected. This can make the table less stable during driving, turning, or braking.
Even if the table can physically fit inside the vehicle, it may shift more easily during transportation and could cause damage to the table, the vehicle, or other items inside.
If you are picking up a dining table, we usually recommend keeping it packaged or separated when possible. Delivery may be a safer option for larger or heavier dining tables.
Not Sure If It Will Fit?
Before pickup, we recommend measuring your vehicle and comparing it with the product dimensions. You can also contact our team with your vehicle size and the item you are picking up.
We will be happy to help you decide whether self-pickup is suitable or if delivery would be a safer option.
